Thanks Daniel! I've seen the pictures of your's, its very nice looking.  I also read your review on Harmony Central, and needless to say, this guitar will also be an Adam Jones Tribute Model (I've been a huge Tool fan for many years now).  I noticed you have a Marshall Mode 4, how is that thing?

Yeah Adam Jones is GOD.Needless to say that you´ll be pleased by your Shamray.
Can you post a picture of you "custom headstock inlay"?
The Mode 4 is better than most people think it is,you can go from clean to Marshall-crunch to Ultra Midless Highgain. Those "scoop" knobs are awesome! For the price its every penny worth.
But in a few days i will get my Diezel VH-4 :)

Wow, seems that Shamray is a gathering for Tool fans! My Silverburst is hopefully gonna be CS0012, and thanks to Daniel posting about his, otherwise I wouldn't have ever found this place.
I have a funny story about how I first met the legendary Silverburst, but I'll save that for another time...

Seeing Tool live a few times this past tour was actually what inspired the inlay design.  They had a giant septagram as a backdrop for all of 'Reflection-Triad' and 'Lateralus'.  The ouroboros is something they played on those huge video screens during 'H'. There is a still shot of the actual image they used on www.chetzar.com, but it is too complex I think for an inlay.

Unfortunately, I never saw them on the Aenima tours, but I think I recall Danny having some sort of Enochian board in front of his set at each of the shows I attended.

I havent listened to enough Tool to have a real 'opinion'. The tunes I have heard (here and there) have showed some influences like Floyd and Zeppelin, and other rather likeable stuff. Basically it sounds like "Rock and Roll" to me, they do remind me of a couple of bands I produced records for in Vancouver (back in the mid-90s...)

Tool seems to be more than holding their own aganst the many other acts working that genre - I think their rather vigorous sales figures worldwide pretty much speak for themselves! :)

A "long neck tenon" gives a bigger glueing surface, and with our special proprietary Russian fish hide glue creating an organic bond at the molecular level -  that translates to more integration of vibrations, so the whole guitar resonates better.

The 'super-jumbo XXXL neck tenon' on CS-0009 is just to increase the neck mass a little bit to compensate for the special carved neck heel. (styled after the picture below)

Wow, that neck joint looks awesome...I've been looking for something like that in a les Paul....are there any angled/side shots of that to see what fret that goes up to???  I have another thread looking to a get a 24 fret Les Paul made possibly....this would help that design so much.  Another solution in combination would be to move the bridge up a quarter of an inch or so...the neck would stick out a little more but it would help that upper fret access bigtime!!

On an LP, the cutaway joins the body at about the 20th fret, so that's also the limit of the neck heel cutaway, without modifying up the natural 'LP cutaway curvature'... From the back, the contoured heel cutaway corresponds to the area under the 16th to 21st frets! (see heel pic above)

You can see the future heel carve marked sort of as an "X-ray line" in this picture.. which shows top carving just getting underway! The end of the fretboard and the XXXL neck tenon are also roughly penciled in for illustration...

What's up fellow tool fans... and fellow silverburst fans.. first... thanks to you Daniel for your post on HarmonyCentral about your silverburst.. I read that and had to check out the Shamray site... I own a 1980 Gibson Les Paul Custom Silverburst.. and I love it!  One of my favorite out of my 12 Les Pauls.. definitely a tone all to itself... but now after seeing your guitar and other Les Paul models.. I myself.. think in the near future I am going to custom order a Les Paul model from Shamray... but of course with the Red LED's.. :)

Have you gotten a chance Daniel to play a Gibson Silverburst?  And if so how do you think it compares in playability and tone to the Shamray?  Just curious...

Also check out my band if you guys could.....    www.mp3.com.au/flydust      We're a rock band from Colorado, USA...

Take care guys.. talk to you all soon.... peace

@Michael

No,i haven´t played a Original Silverburst so far coz they are VERY RARE in here in Germany.I only found one one guy here who has one,but he lives in the other corner of Germany,so there is no chance to play it  .
I was just about to buy a new Original Black LPC for 3000 euros, but luckily i found out of Shamrays Custom Shop just before i had bought it!WHAT A LUCK!!!
I can say that my one sounds like a "natural born Les Paul",i dont know if the silverburst-color-sound-affecting-thing is true, but i can get some cool "Tool-Sounds" out of it....and of course it looks better then the faded-grey-yellow-green original ones. :-)

@Michael,

I am curious about this whole 'silverburst tone' thing, as I have yet to play an original one myself.  Do you find yours to have a noticeably different tone than your other LP customs? All I know is heavy-ass guitars are the way to go when it comes to darker tone.

Yes the tone story is true.... there is a dark tone to these guitars with the original pickups... I was lucky to find a 1980 Silverburst from Guitar Center in Hollywood, CA one night searching the net.. cost me a pretty penny though  $2,800 but well worth it.. all original.. slight buckle rash..... but my silver is still silver.. which you know is rare.. mine has not greened at all... VERY RARE..!! Hence the high price tag....and in awesome condition.....    I love it!  Daniel.. how much are the VH4's in Germany?  I have 2 Dual Rectifiers I play through..but would love a vh4..... if you could let me know how much you can get em for i'd appreciate it....

@ Michael,

My LP Silverburst is costing me $2200, but that is with shipping, shipping insurance, and an extra pickup that I am going to put in my SG. Shamray offers so many upgrades for such reasonable prices, it is definately the best deal I could find for a Silverburst, and much more personalized as well.

What do you think of your MESAs? I am going to purchase a new amp soon, but I am stuck between the MESA Road King and a VHT UL or CLX.

I am hoping of getting another guitar from Shamray in the next year, and while I hope the best for their business, I also hope their prices don't change much. Maybe a sort of first-order-first-serve system is in order?

Matt.... I love my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers... awesome tone.... I am actually looking into getting a Mesa Road King amp head here soon .. and selling one of my dual rec's toward it....   You'll have to let me know how the guitar is Matt after you get it... do you or Dan.. own any Gibson Les Pauls?    If so you'll have to tell me how it is in comparison to them.. with Shamray's great reviews.. I am definitely wanting a custom Les Paul model guitar for myself now....

@ whoever reads these while Michael Walker is on vacation,

I have a query regarding the Silverburst finish you guys use. Does it age and 'green' as on the original Gibson's? Or is it more permanent?

I was wondering if it would be possible to use a finish that will 'green' over time. If it isn't, I think I will opt for a similiar finish to the one Spike is getting on his LP. Let me know and I will find a picture or two of the color I would like.

peace,
Matt Brawner

From what Michael has told me, the finish will not change once applied... the risk you take with a finish that will green over time is that it will become the horrible snot-yellowburst unless you keep it in certain conditions.
Another thing you might want to take into consideration is how wide you want the burst to be - 1979 models had a wider, more gradual burst, and the 1980 onwards had a much quicker burst with more black around the edges. If you're interested I can send you my little archive of Silverburst pictures, which include some that Michael sent me.

hi! just checking in from a web-cafe in Bangkok... (weather here is 33 degrees celsius, and very humid) :-)

As Spike says, the finish will not green over time, it will stay the basically the same color for the next 100 years or so, as long as you dont leave it out in the sun a lot (strong ultraviolet will fade any pigment over time...)

That'd be cool if you wanted to send me some of your silverburst archives, I have a decent one goin myself. I think I may go with this color. (yellow case)As for the burst shape...I found an example of an 80's style burst with more 'fade-in' than most. Too bad the angle isn't that great in the pic.
