I'd like hole pattern of the 11 hole PG to be like the 1962 strat, and not like the American series of todey, if possible, so that the guitar looks as much as a 1962 strat as possible. ...That is, IF it's available.

I know there's a lot of time to go before anybody needs to think about the PG, but I just thought about it, and posted this right away, so I wouldn't forget about it.

Actually there is no difference between a 1962 USA reissue pickguard, and a vintage 1962 pickguard.

Only some of the MEXICAN strats  - and a very few older Japanese strats  - have a (slightly) different hole pattern from the original!

No, you're right. The "American Vintage 62 Stratocaster" has the hole pattern that I want. (But the "contemporary" "American Stratocaster" has one screw hole closer to the middle pickup than it is on the 62.)

(Man, do I feel stupid fretting about such minute details at this stage.)

a USA strat with a new "alternative" 11-hole pickguard!???!! Thats NEWS to me... Why would they do that - it makes no sense at all!

Anyway... rest assured that we will be using the traditional hole pattern :)

oops - i stand corrected! while i was referring to the "traditional" 11 hole pattern.. what you are referring to is the transitional 11-hole pattern that was introduced in mid-1959 and dropped by march 1963.

(And for good reason too - that particular configuration is butt-ugly!)

Screw #11 (counting clockwise from top left) never changed from its original 8-hole pattern location when they made the first '10-hole' pickguards in 1959... but then for reasons unknown, they moved it up a half an inch in mid-59 for the first 11-hole pickguards. For some reason it took them until spring of 63 to notice how bad it looked, and then they moved screw #11 back to its nomal place (exactly where it was located as screw number 8 in the 8-hole pickguard!)  and it has remained there ever since...

what looks like 'slight figuring' is actually just tool marks from Pasha's plane (its only roughed out on the surfaces). They will disappear when it gets its fine sanding.

But the alder does have some nice grain to it, and you will see it quite clearly through the lacquer (right now its obscured somewhat by the 'fuzzy' wood surface)

The reason I ask is that the pot nearest to the pickups looks different from the others (the fender no-load pot) and I thought that should be the blender, but on the picks it looks like it is the volume pot. Am I right, or just overly nitpicking? ;-)

I think I'll need to go get some anaesthetic or something to handle the wait for shipping. ;-)

...But I hope those "009" string envelopes were for another guitar, and mine has the specified 010-046's and the nut to go with them.

No need to fret over the details - its still only  "work-in-progress".. :)

right now its just 'hanging around', with strings on (while the neck acclimates to string tension).

In a couple of days we will proceed with final completing and setup. Maybe by friday i can give it final inspection and play-testing ( and record some sound clips...)  :)

Tenative shipping date is AUGUST 16th

5 little clips, one in each switch position - each encoded at 128K, and under 1 minute.

My apologies for the lackluster playing... i really didnt do this MAGNIFICENT guitar justice!

Once again,  i left it to the very last minute (i have to bring 0079 back to the shop tommorrow morning) and once again I found myself banging out some recordings at 2:30 AM !

The playing is great too! No need to apologize for that! In fact it's very possible that that was the best playing the guitar will ever experience. ;-)

I'm glad you think it's turned out good! Ut certainly sounds that way. I LOVE all the sounds, but the neck+mid and the bridge alone are my favourites of the five clips.

Did you try the blender, and the neck+bridge in parallel option? Does it sound good? Tele-ish?

Oh: Is it OK if I use those clips on a web page about the guitar?

Again: Your service to us customers is unparallelled! Above and beyond! Thanks a million for your time and effort!

its basically modelling a "1958 tweed 1-12" (18 watt, 2 6V6s) running into a modern VOX 4-12 cabinet. I didnt have time to fiddle with the guitar, just had all the knobs turned all the way up, and flipped through the switch positions....

On friday, as soon as i got to the shop, i did a full inspection on your guitar, discovered that the no-load pot actually wasnt behaving very nicely as a "neck-blender".

Since Lars announced he was going to take your guitar back to Norway with him, we didnt have time to order a 'TBX' pot! So, we rewired the guitar as follows:

Master volume
tone for neck & middle
no-load tone for bridge (bypasses capacitor completely when turned up to 10)

It sounds even better that way! We put on a fresh set of Fender bullet 10s, and packed it up in bubble wrap.

So its ON ITS WAY HOME today. I gave your shipping money "rebate" to Lars. (it worked out to US$170 after accounting for packing materials)

CS-0079 is home! I don't know where to begin. This is really a fantastic instrument. The finish looks absolutely fantastic. There's a couple of miniscule "imperfections" under the lacquer, but they just make the guitar look unique, I think. It's almost unbeliavable that this kind of precision in manufacturing and finish is achieveable on something that's crafted completely by hand!

At first glance, it looks like any nice (mint condidtion) Stratocaster, but when you sit down looking at it closer, you'll appreciate that every little detail is perfectly made and FANTASTIC looking. ...And knowing that this is made by hand from scratch, just for me, out of two pieces of wood, makes me NEVER EVER want to part with it! Pasha, you're an ARTIST! Thank you! And, Michael; Thank you VERY much to you as well. This would never have gotten this good if it
wasn't for your guidance.

I sadly haven't had the chance to plug it in yet, since I have no amp at the moment. (But that will soon be rectified.) The guitar has a surprising amount of volume, sustain and resonance unplugged, though, and I think that's a very good sign. I'll report back as soon as I have tried it with a good amplifier. I'm confident that it won't disappoint me, of course.

It feels fantastic, looks fantastic and just oozes quality. Needless to say, I'm extatic! CS-0079 does the trick of looking like a no-nonsense player's guitar and a drool inducing GEM at the same time.

The only slightly negative things are the facts that I didn't get the tweed case (but hey, the ABS Stagg case is probably way more practical) and that I didn't get the neck pickup blender. This seems very insignificant when holding the guitar in my hands, though. There's also some visible miniscule circular "traces" (I'd say "scratches", but these are really far, far from significant enough to be called that.)left by the polishing disc, when looking at the lackquer very closely, at a certain angle against the light. I assume this is impossible to avoid, though.

Oh, and the straplock parts that go on the strap wasn't in the case, and neither was the keys for the case, which was a bit of a bummer. I trust you'll send these to me right away.

So, as you can see; all in all I'm VERY happy about my guitar. I don't think I could have hoped for anything better anywhere.

Thank you!

BTW: I made this webpage for it:

Nice web page! Those "traces' you notice are a normal artifact from final hand-polishing - your guitar's nitro finish is too thin to use a polishing wheel!

Your straplock buttons accidentally ended up on my desk at HOME (I took then off when i recorded those sound-clips for you, but as it was 2 in the morning, i forgot to put them back on)...  I will airmail them to you right away!

The polishing artifacts are not a problem. I just noticed and mentioned them. I just LOVE the guitar. In just one day, it's become one of my most cherished posessions.

Good thing the strap buttons were in a safe place. I thought maybe they'd been lost in the shop somewhere. Thanks! If you manage to locate the case keys, it'd be nice if you could drop them in the same envelope, but that's no biggie at all.

Thanks again!

Well, I couldn't wait, so on my way home from work yesterday, I picked up a Roland Microcube. (Which sounds surprisingly nice for a puny solid state "toy" amplifier.)

The CÒÐÀÒÎÊÀÑÒÅÐ sounds very good at home as well, just as expected, even though my playing (if you can call it that) is so bad that you can hardly tell one pickup from another when I play. Luckily i have a couple of skilled friends that I brought in. ;-)

I'm not really sure... looking at the build pics, it could be american alder, or possibly they used some Russian "swamp alder" from Stepanov's private stock (he collects pieces that are large and reasonably clear). You can see there are some mineral streaks and flecking in there, but nothing out of line for an American strat. If the guitar is 'on the heavy side" (normal strat weight) then its US alder... if its "light-weight" then you probably scored some of Stepanov's wood.

Well, Michael. I've weighed it, and the guitar (assembled, of course) weighs approximately (a bit under, actually) 7 pounds. (On my presumably inaccurate bathroom scales, weighing myself with and without the guitar several times, and the exact figure I came up with was 6.6 lbs, but that sounds too good to be true.)

So, what do you think? Russian alder, American alder, or "Stepanov Special Reserve"?

no, i dont know what species of Alder, exactly.

Shamray's alder i could find out about, as he cuts down the actual live trees himself in his ancestral village 200 km outside of Moscow.

But Stepanov's alder was very old stock that he got in barter with some crafter, and it came to him as lumber (thus its impossible to determine the species precisely!)
