haha, ok lets set it straight, ol' Lucian and i share guitar ideas, we rely on each others input and thats cool. Lucian came up with the 'Guitar' Logo, and seeming we are both in the same band, i spose its not gay for me to use it either, he's just 'licencing' it to me, hahaha. But yeah, i have designed another gibson-esque logo for a future shamray SG i plan on getting in the next year or two, after a few other custom designs are fullfilled first ofcourse, you gotta file your GAS in order, or it will eat you alive.

those specs rock a hell of a lot man! i would really like to see
this one when its complete.

but hey, you dont want any inlays, right? no blocks?

btw; i agree with nick. take an EMG 89; that one is
splittable.....quite usefull.

Thanks guys, im experienced with EMG's, i have 3 guitars with complete sets,

Dean ML Phantom Standard - 81/60
Washburn Dimeslime - 81/89
Washburn DImebolt3333-81/89.

I am happy with the 81 in the bridge, it is a fine pickup. Ive also had an 81/81 combo in the Dean, and it too was fine. I swapped back to the 81/60 combo because i needed the neck 81 to go in the bridge of my dimeslime.

The way i have this guitars pickups wired is...
Toggle Switch:

(up:neck/middle:neck+bridge/down:bridge )

Where does the middle pickup come into the equation you ask? Well if my memory serves me correctly (ive had long discussions with michael about the switching and i think this is what we agree'd on.)

The middle pickup is 'addable' to any pickup configuration the toggle switch dictates. So if im jammin on my bridge pickup and want a little bit of the middle pickup in my sound, all i do is roll the volume up a bit. Same applies to any other pickup configuarion, and when the toggle switch is in middle position with all volumes up, all 3 pickups are engaged. I can subtract from individual pickups this way thus crafting many different sounds from these 3 pickups. So i stick by my pickup config and complex wiring job. lol.

my experience, they where quite uhm....shrill.....

I dont presume you use Koch. do you? (A)

I dont know what a Koch is, but as my picture suggests, i play on a Marshall JCM2000 TSL100 watt head and 1960a speaker cabinet. With volume on about 4-5 and gain on 8 i have been able to get some really full tones from my 81's (as my guitars are all set neck and either mahogany or alder, with rose wood fingerboards + maple tops on the two washburns), it only gets kinda shrill when you have it at lower volumes, emg's are definately a pickup for loud amp players, but the TSL is a very very good amp, you just really need to mess with it to find your niche is its wide tone spectrum. It handles EVERYTHING, between country, blues, classic rock, 80's metal and a smoother/warmer pantera tone. It doesnt do the uber brutal metal tones as heard from lets say, a dual rectifier, but this marshall has its own take on metal, its a monsterous, girthy, angry tone, as opposed to the dual rectifiers seering gain sound.

Perfect all round amp. What type of guitars did you play with the emgs in it, what type of neck contruction and what types of woods involved, also was it string thru, floyd, or TOM? Cause it seems to matter a fair bit as per my experience. :)

hahah, nice story lucian, but from owning emg's, i can tell the differences in different guitars, not enough to say, "that guitar is made of alder!" or something, but if i heard any of my guitars on a recording, id know which is which.

i had a guitar with EMG's in it. a les paul and a charvel
superstrat. the les paul with set neck mahogony, and the charvel
with alder body, and neckthru maple.

by the way; i am kinda disappointed that you are not familiar
with our national amplified pride and joy, koch. its a dutch
brand. and EXTREMELY good. much much much better than
marshall. it has the Fender-clean, the marshall crunch, and
where the second channel ' stops' when it comes to gain, the
third channel ' takes off". that one has the double rectifier gain
with a LOT of punch. its really one of the best amps i've ever
tried. its IMO better than bogner. but hey, in the USA it costs
over 3000 dollars (the powertone 2 top) and here " just' 2100
dollars :D:D:D

haha, yeah mats, i know. but still; i prefer Koch over marshall
anytime. and here, koch isnt really much more expensive than
marshall. why? simpel. if something is just a WEE bit not right, i
call Dolf Koch (the owner/founder of the company) and he sends
a tech guy to fix the amp. without a charge ofcourse.

if I want my koch to have a wee bit of an other sound, he will
send a tech guy to make that happen (for an extremely small
fee. around and about 100 euro's for the tech guy AND the new
tubes AND installing the new tubes, and bias them all)

thats service. not marshall :)

Just a side note, that middle pic is a close up pic of the fretboard and its brightened up alot to see the 'figure'. Im told that it looks like a normal ebony board from afar but when your get closer and closer you get to notice more and more of the figure.

Excellent, just got a look at the pics now, Im liking what i see. 'Cept i freaked out when i saw the binding, cause to my eyes it looked like 7 layer and not 5 layer, but seeming i havent seen a guitar with multi-layer binding before in a creation stage i dont know if parts of the binding is 'painted over' (namely the white-ish bit before the headstock vaneer) Forgive my freak out, i justr checked out the GS-custom's binding and it seems that there is more black strips in his binding (3) as opposed to my 2.

p.s thanks for the build update too michael, it seems to be coming together rather quickly.

its 5-layer binding, as per your spec!

I'm not sure about the veneer, looks like Sapele, or maybe Khaya. Certainly its 'some kind of mahogany'!

I wasnt kidding about "NOWS THE TIME" in the International forum. There is currently no lead time, and when a crafter has only one guitar to work on, it gets done a little faster (he still has to wait the glue to dry - but progress can be pretty rapid!) :)

body cavity shielding reduces the noise and hum  that can be induced in your guitar's wiring from outside sources (nearby electronic equipment or fluorescent lighting, for example...)

i put together a different mockup of the logo in 'silver mop' its ok, its hard to work it in MS paint, but does a rough job, enough for shamrays guys to have a look at and go from there, smoothing it out etc.

In that pic, all the vertical lines arent parallel, i would really like them to be parallel with each other, so the logo doesnt look wonkey etc,

hypothetical question here michael: If i wanted my 'guitar' inlay logo redone, what kind of costs and time would i be looking at. The A in guitar is far too big, it breaks the 'line' along the logo set by the 'u' 'i' & 'r' in Guitar. I think i can live with the logo being as it is, but i would like to atleast ask to see what i could do about it before i recieve it. :) thanks alot man..

"scraping part" is referring to "scraping the binding"... VERY CAREFULLY cleaning the binding with a scraper after the color coats.

No extra charge for changing the headstock logo... if you really dont like it, i will send it back for re-work. (will only add an extra week or so)

Its done by hand you know- our artist is not a machine, she is an actual human being who really does all of our headstock logos by hand, and although she can certainly copy anything 'letter-perfect', sometimes she does take 'liberties'  if her muse moves her.

Apparently it happens that she favours a larger "a" instead of the design that you submitted (for what reason, i really dont know - i certainly didnt suggest it, i just gave her your original sketch...)

well the inlay itself before the guitar went to the paint shop, i liked it, i was happy with it and then when it went to the paint shop, the 'A' (and some other letters) became thinner and therefore i noticed the tallness of the 'A' moreso. How does this happen, do they hand paint the spaces between the logo?

If you notice lucians (cs-0074) inlay, the 'A' and the rest of the lower case letters are all the same height etc. Being an artistic person myself, i know what i want and i respect this lady to do wonderful inlays etc, but i just cant help wanting it as exact as possible.

It would be lovely if i could have it done again, im sorry to put her through it once more, everything else on the logo is fine basically, bar that 'A', so if she can replicate the 'A' as done here - http://www.musicforums.ru/sh_int/getfile.php/shamraymusicforumsru_shamraygallery/5797/CS-0074_0576.jpg
(*with height, shape and thickness*)

I would be very appriciative! Infact the closer she gets to that whole logo there, the better :)

Also, whilst we are gonna redo the logo anyhow... the bottom of the 'T' (the little connecting peice) goes down a little bit past the 'line' the rest of the bottoms of the lowercase letters create. If that could be inline with the others i would greatly appriciate the time she takes and thank her endlessly.

Thanks alot michael, sorry for the delay but its very important to me. ;)

Nimrod, i wanted the cut away to be larger because i saw a picture of a BC Rich Warlock with a heavy cut away on the horn at the back and i have big hands, so the least wood in that area the better i guess.

Plus ive never seen another les paul-esque on earth with this type of extra carving. So i like the unique-ness of it.

okayy, i see.

i know what you mean, when you say that your hand hits the
horn when you play (at least, thats what I can make out of your
story) I have that, with es335 guitars. or similar guitars.

if i want a semi-hollow electrical guitar, i'd have shamray build
me a semihollow les paul (like the Florentine). nevertheless; I
agree with you on the headstock-logo-size part.

a " smaller" A would be more beautiful, and more in line with the
guitar...i think....

this guitar really rocks dude. its great-looking. and indeed; VERY
unique. dont know any les paul quite like it.

Here is the latest from the shop, sanded for last layers. Michael, in this picture, are the inside of the pickup routes not painted fully? If not, may i have them just blacked out please, as with no pickup bezels i imagine you will be able to see bits and peices of unpainted wood in there.

hi Phil! according to my current shipping schedule, your guitar is estimated to ship exactly on its DUE DATE (Dec 9th).

(Its currently 20th in line, so that date is subject to change.)

If we received your balance tommorrow, it would be bumped up to 7th place on the shipping list... but it could be bumped down by any "more overdue" guitars that sent their balance in.

Our shipping priority is determined as follows:

1) is the guitar actually ready to ship?

2) Primary criteria for establishing shipping order is the estimated delivery date we gave at the start of the project (check your workorder)

3) is the guitar already paid in full? (guitars paid in full get 'bumped up', since we arent waiting on funds to pay for shipping)

So, the 'top of the list' consists of all the guitars that are already paid in full, ordered in priority sequence correlating to their original due dates ("most overdue" ships first!). After that, all guitars are listed in sequence according to the original workorder completion estimate.

The "blemish" you refer to is just the way that the binding turned out. Some little particles of the black layer seem to have 'bled" underneath, when the lacquer clearcoat was applied. Nothing can be done about that, sorry!

Its little things like that which serve to remind you that the guitar is actually 100% hand-made (even the bindings - every single layer of that binding was made by hand!)

Well - unfortunately, there are 12 guitars on the list that are already more overdue than yours (yours isnt actually DUE until Dec 9th) and several of them are ready to ship now, so they have to go out first!

Its a pity that Mr. Shamray mismanaged things so badly that we now have a 2 month backlog on shipping. But he has been showing a marginal improvement in performance recently, and he did hire a third manager this week - which should theoretically improve things greatly in the future... maybe we wont HAVE a shipping backlog in 2006!

i hope the new manager works out for the best. Im starting to understand what lucian was feeling in the last month or so before he got his guitar. I couldnt understand it until yknow, seeing the guitar completed and just sitting their on a stand. (well its almost finished, it needs a truss rod cover haha)

Hi Phil!

On track??? Not even close... :-(

Shamray still hasn't confirmed that he actually shipped the one guitar he promised he would ship saturday (CS-0083, which has been sitting in the shop PACKED for almost 2 weeks now)

if he DID, then your guitar "could" ship next week sometime (as early as Tuesday, theoretically).

However, there are STILL 7 guitars "more overdue" than yours, and any one of them could 'bump' you down the list, should they become ready to ship before yours goes out.

The leading contender for this is CS-0059, which was actually due to ship out September 9th (exactly 3 months before your guitar became due).

Stepanov promised me that 0059 would be ready Friday, (though it wasnt!) but there is a chance that it will be waiting for inspection on Monday.

well seeming my guitar is sitting on the wall, ready to go... If CS-0059 isnt ready by say, tuesday... could it be shipped? Plus when is russia 'shutting down' for that drinking festival? :S

Also, whats the situation with this other person that has been employed to help with shipping? Man i hate this shipping bottle neck... but i can really sympathise with the other customers waiting longer than i have. Thanks anyway michael.

I asked Shamray again yesterday, and Shamray CLAIMS he can get two MORE guitars out this week (drinking party starts Saturday).

However, its apparent now that CS-0083 STILL hasnt shipped (thats the one he promised to ship on Saturday - then promised me again on Sunday that he would ship Monday morning, and then promised me again on Monday afternoon he would ship Monday evening).

Anyway, if 0083 doesnt ship by TOMMORROW morning, then i can't imagine he is going to be able to get out even ONE more guitar this week. We shall see...

sounds 'promising', lol.

Well, if there was anyway us customers could light a fire under his bum, we'd be madly sparking flint rocks and rubbing sticks together.

I can believe that its possible to get two more guitars out this week, i mean its wednesday arvo here in aussie land, and i could see how even i would do it, so hopefully Senor Shamray will be able to squeeze a few guitars out to make himself (not to mention a couple of lucky customers) feel good over this drinking festival/xmas time. :D

I look forward to any news, and thanks michael.

Phil,
By far the best thing you can do is just sit back and forget about it until you get the message that it has shipped. Otherwise you will get very angry with it all. A month ago, my guitar needed a few little finishing touches done...minor, 10 minute jobs I imagine. Sadly, it still sits in the same place, the jobs not done. Last I heard, it is supposed to ship on the 18th January...with at least 7 guitars to ship before mine, and a 2 week holiday just about to begin....well you can work it out for yourself. This is a guitar started mid july (with an estimated 12 week build time). IF it does ship on the 18th, that will be 6 months. There is no point getting pissed off over it. It achieves nothing.

Having been there myself ( I waited a whole year for mine... and then had to send it back ;) ), I can only agree with Jon. Play your other guitar(s) and try to forget about it.

That said, you do seem to have a healthy attitude towards this whole thing Phil, so keep being patient and know it'll (very likely) be worth it all in the end. :)

thanks for the input guys, all the points are valid, Im not exactly getting 'angry' its just HARD not to be disappointed, you watch it being built all this time, everything is organised and done on time etc, and then once its completed everything changes. Its hard not to get swept away with comments based on disappointment, so i always take a good few reads of my post before i post, to make it fair as possible on whomever it concerns, We will see what happens :) The wait is always worth it in the end, i do agree with that... its just hard to convince myself of that seeming that this is my first one, future ones i guess will be easier to wait for? But hopefully by then there mightnt be much waiting.

take it easy guys :D

Phil go on ebay a look at your favorite guitars for sale or go to pawn shops etc... I buy vintage guitars and parts to keep my attention away from the SHamRay Ship fun. It is what it is with ShamRay process. Could you imagine what it was like Odering a Custom type guitar from Gibson in the 50's. No modern shipping. Yikes. Hang in there, Hannabal said All good things come when you wait!

Ive found an excellent tele body, see thru black quilt, ash body, gonna have it routed for a humbucke in the bridge, gonna slam a bigsby on it, grab a neck off ebay, some lockin tuners, the whole thing should cost me under $1000 australian which is awesome. Actually i never touch a drop of alcohol, so I'm not getting tanked, no. However, I can't speak for the other guys... :-)

I was hoping i could get in to visit the shop this week, but neither Shamray nor Stepanov have been available - it seems they have opted for the "full pull" of holiday time. Its been rumoured that one or more crafters, as well as Dima our chief completing specialist have spent some time working over the holidays. But I havent been able to confirm that yet!

For sure, the shop will re-open on the 10th (Tuesday) and Stepanov has confirmed to me that at least he shall be there then. There is a slim possibility i might be able to meet with Shamray sooner (Monday, or even the weekend) - so if that happens, then i will be in the shop to get some updates.

Your guitar passed its final inspection / playtest TODAY.

What a NICE guitar!!!! A real pleasure to play.

All they have to do is clean it up, wipe all the fingerprints off, and pack it. If Shamray brings us the SKB case today, it shall be the NEXT GUITAR TO SHIP.

Look for pics in your email in a couple of hours...

Wonderful,
Great to hear the kind words about how the guitar plays. I think im experiencing an optical illusion with the action of the guitar. Haha, no one seems to notice what im noticing so im probably just seeing things, but if i look down the pic of the neck with the LED's, the action seems high from 9th fret onwards. Did that stand out to you at all? Meh, im sure its fine.

As for the notion of it being shipped soon, i must say Im very excited. Ive really been stingin' for it. Haha, i look forward to any updates you may have. :D

Pictures look great, thanks again for doing that for us mate.

Cheers,

Theoretically, as soon as its cleared customs in Australia, you can track it in your local EMS parcel tracker.

But the tracking number is typically only useful 'after the fact'... generally the guitar will be at your door before you can find it in your local online tracking database.

You can see it in the Russian tracking database (http://garantpost.ru) as soon as its cleared customs HERE - but russian tracking doesnt extend outside of russia!

well i checked that site and input my tracking number in russian. It worked, was put thru on the 5th of march at 3:30ish, my mum got a call today from australian customs saying it had arrived, they said it has been quarentined the guy said for 10 days, but that was before he asked what it was, to which my mum replied a custom built guitar from russia. I wish i was able to speak to the guy cause i had second hand info. But i assume that now that they know what it is, it shouldnt be a problem and they will let it thru. Hopefully expecting it in the next couple of days.

recieved it today. Im in two minds about this guitar, looks great and plays great. Then when you get up close, there are what id consider possibly 'too many flaws'. The binding is giving me the most grief. It kinda breaks my heart. But the guitar sounds great, it needs a neck adjustment as 9thfret on the G string is dying almost instantly, and the 18th fret on the high E string is fretting as what the 19th should. Quite odd, also theres this strange green stuff between the fretboard and the frets. So yeah its a strange position im in at the moment, a full and proper review will follow in the next couple of months. In the meantime ill have it set up again, adjusted etc.
