Àâòîð Òåìà: Shamray Custom Shop JHD EXP Mk.II
Âðåìÿ: 25.11.2005 15:03

Congratulations Jonas, on the re-birth of your new Shamray Custom Shop instrument (serial number CS 0063)!

We will post pictures of it's construction-in-progress from time to time here in this thread.

For the curious, here are the specs on CS 0063:

* Set neck (long neck tenon) "ESP EXP" Explorer body shape. Mahogany body with instrument grade flame maple top AND back (billets LS-267 and 270). Use the best looking piece as the top! No body binding!

* 3-piece mahogny neck.

* Angled “ESP-EXPLORER” headstock with flame maple facing (wood from LS-267/270) and flame maple back of headstock facing (also from LS-267/270)

* Control cavity cover crafted from flame maple. (LS-267/270, matched with the back body facing)

* 24 and 3/4 inch scale length. 22 Sintoms “6100” frets. 1 11/16 inch nut width.

* Neck profile: "U"-shaped, 20mm @1st fret, 22 mm @12th fret

* 12 inch fingerboard radius. Graph-tech nut. Dual-Action truss rod. Ebony truss rod cover

* Ebony fingerboard to be as dark black as possible and fairly tight grained.
NO fretboard binding!

* solid ebony truss rod cover with "JHD"-logo inlaid in M-O-P

* solid ebony pickup rings

* Mother of pearl side dots.

* PRS "Purple mist" finish (see pictures) on all flame maple parts. The rest of the guitar should be finished opaque black. Thin black bursting (like on CS-0057) on edges of body front and back, and edges of headstock front and back(cavity cover is purple mist - to blend into body)

* Mother of pearl Shamray Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock.

* Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 (neck) and Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom (bridge) pickups, Ebony pickup-covers, 100% cavity shielding.

* Sperzel 3+3 (black) machines, Gotoh T-O-M set ( black), black Schaller straplocks.

* All black hardware (including pickup bezels, toggle switch, screws, etc...).

* 3 black metallic "dome" knobs, individual volume controls for each pickup, tone control for the neck pickup.

* Switchcraft (USA) Toggle switch in the ESP Explorer position, NOT on the lower horn as on a Gibson Explorer.

* Ernie Ball .010-.052 strings, tuned to D, fairly low action.

* Output jack mounted on the side of the guitar.

* Custom-made lightweight flight case. (Black interior and exterior)

* Fingerboard inlay: modified custom version of "man-to-wolf" transformation across the length of the fretboard

Yea, that's where I first noticed it. It's pretty much the same colour I first wanted for 0057 though.

I really want the darker stripes to be blackish though, so it might have to end up a little darker in the end.

In short, a quartersawn board has been cut so that the grain runs perpendicular to the widest face of the board. This results in a stronger, less flexible neck.

Probably sounds really silly, but I think it would be cooler ;)

Hi Sushkov, I just got this pic from Michael.

While it looks nice on it's own, I don't think the new inlay really works that well with the first one. It looks like the wolf is about 50% bigger then on the first inlay and the proportions don't seem to match up. (Mostly the nose/head seems a little big compared to the first one).

I would really appreciate it if you could make another one with the size and proportions of the wolf as close to the first inlay as possible, basicly try to make it look as much as the wolf in the first inlay as possible, and also try to make the rest of the "wolf" inlays as close as possible to that.

Perhaps you could show me your drawings before you make them into inlays from now on, so you don't have to do any extra work?

I hope you don't think I'm being rude or anything, but it's really important that this looks just right to me, I hope you understand! ;)

Yea, I think it needs to be smaller, and just look more like the first wolf. The same thing with that 3rd inlay.

I REALLY(!) like that first wolf, it just looks like a real wolf to me, the size of the head compared to the body, the detailing of the silloute, etc.

If you could make the rest of the wolf inlays look EXACTLY like that first wolf but in different poses that would be GREAT! ;)

They're a relatively small but up and coming company based in Devon, England. Actually my dad first made me aware of them, he lives about 20 minutes from the factory. They hand-wind every pickup using supposedly the best materials available.

I've only tried the Warpig myself in a friends LP, but it was a huge improvement over the stock Gibson pickups. VERY hot, great for really heavy riffing, yet warm and airy with good definition, just a really sweet pickup. Played it alongside my own SD JB equiped LP and it blew it away in every way, wheather playing distorted or with mild overdrive, or clean for that matter.

Only downside appears to be the price, but considering how much the pickups define a guitars tone I'd say they're well worth it.

That looks nice, but I think you're right, it needs to be a little more purple. I like the more pale purple look, like in these pics. If you could get that colour that would be great.

If you could try out some different versions you like and perhaps take some pictures that show off the colour (preferably outdoors) so I could have a look I'd really appreciate it. :)

Those new pics of the inlays are sligthly better then the others, and I think they'll help you out in making it look like the original.

Please just make paper drawings first though, I might want to tweak a thing here and there and I don't want you to have to spend time on making the actual inlays and then end up not using them. ;)

I'll e-mail Michael and remind him to forward the pics to you.

Well, it's 4am and I can't sleep. :(

Sushkov, the inlays look pretty good, especially that first wolf, I really do like it, but for some reason it just doesn't feel quite right. The problem is I can't quite put my finger on what it is that's bothering me.

I've tried doing some drawings of my own, but those don't come out the way I want them either.

And the thing is, now that I've found some decent pics of the real inlay I don't really think it looks that great up close either.

I've thought a lot about it these last couple of days, and I'm now realising that I made a mistake in choosing this inlay in the first place.

I hate to have to tell you this, especially as you've already started working on it, but better now before you spend any more time and effort on it.

If at all possible I would really like to go with another inlay, one that you've already worked on before. I'm refering to the "bat" inlay you did on the "Tanswell Custom". It would still be done in mother of pearl of course and not abalone as on that guitar, but I'd still like the engraving done.

I was seriously considering it before I decided on the "wolf" inlay and I could have gone either way, but unfortunatly I decided on the wrong one.

I realise I'm putting you on the spot here, but in the end I think I'm saving both of us a lot of headache this way.

You won't have to spend all that time doing different drawings and such and can instead go straight to working on the inlay, and I get an inlay I KNOW I really like.

Please get back to me as soon as you read this and let me know your thoughts.

And once again, I'm REALLY sorry I couldn't tell you this before you started working on it... :(

I think the inlay looks good so far, and once the extra details are done to the inlays (shading etc) I think it will look excellent, but theres no use staying with an inlay you dont like whether it be excellent or not. Hopefully the guys will understand where your coming from and not charge you TOO much for the re-do. :)

I was planned to finish wood, inlays and laquer works of your guitar in this year.

I can't accept your updates. And there are 2 reasons for it.

First, it crashes all my plans.

Second, we have no more large abalone shells to make inlays like Gary's bats. Those shells I've get at Black Sea last summer.

That's ok Sushkov, I understand. It's my mistake after all, not yours. I really am sorry for making you work so hard on it.

But, I'm afraid it just isn't working for me, and then I don't think there's any point in using them.

So, lets forget about the inlays, leave the fingerboard as it is, a clean ebony board without inlays looks really cool as well, so lets go with that then.

Let's focus on nailing that colour for the flame maple instead, I'm looking forward to see what you can come up with. ;)

Yes I know, it's just that the yellow maple seems to be shining through a lot more in the last pic then in the first ones. It might be that the surface has been sanded down though so the colour doesn't absorb as well.

Never mind, I really like that colour, lets go with it! :)

Yea, I know that too. I had CS-0057 at home for about a month after all. I was refering to the fact that it looked like the dye wasn't evenly absorbed by the wood. But it's just a test example, so it doesn't really matter as long as it'll come out ok on the actuall guitar. But I'm sure it will.

Actually, i never said the pickups were 'ordered'... what I told Sushkov last week is that i had already instructed Stepanov to order them.

(Stepanov is supposed to be handling ALL parts procurement, effective two months ago)

However, I just talked to him today and he said he HASN'T ordered them yet (due to some problem getting funds onto his Mastercard account, or something) and he says that tommorrow he wants to go over a big list of parts he would like ME to buy for him right away, as a favor.

So probably I will making a BareKnuckle order tommorrow evening. (assuming Bareknuckle arent closed for the holidays)

The reason that procurement was handed over to Stepanov is that if I order parts on MY credit card, then they have to be shipped to MY address - which means that then I have to go way across town and stand in line at the post office for hours on end, day after day, to retrieve all of the parcels (here in Russia, all parcels must be addressed to an INDIVIDUAL, and the individual in question has to show their PASSPORT in order to pick one up)

To be honest, I have MUCH better things to do with my time than stand in line at the post office, and Shamray really can't afford to pay me to do it. My hourly rate consulting fee is roughly ten times what Stepanov makes an hour... (my time is very valuable! :-) )

From what I've been told it's supposed to be more bluish then what these pics show though, I think it's the flash and possible the shop lights that gives it this more pinkish tone.

I think I'll ask Sushkov or Mike if there's any chance of some outdoor pics at some point, they usually show of the true colour better. Assuming the weather is decent, that is...

Excellent!

Looks like the covers fit just fine. One question though, do you wax-pot the pickups with wood covers? I know BKP always do it to their pickups when they fit metal covers to eliminate any risk of extra noise, is it any different with wood? I really would like them as noise-free as possible...

I don't understand this parts thing. Isn't the first deposit one pays to cover materials and parts, and then it looks like it doesn't arrive at the shop before in the last moment? I can see that it isn't exactly standard procedure with this guitar, maybe, since it's a "re-making", but I seem to recall some lacking parts on my guitar too. Dimarzio pots or something that were out of stock when the guitar was finally ready for completion...

Anyway, I hope you will get your guitar soon, Jonas. This is too bad :-(

Yea, it's just pathetic, isn't it? You'd think there'd be some sense of urgency when someone's been waiting 19 fucking months, but no...

"Re-make" or not, he's had 4 months to get the parts for this guitar together. It's just standard parts, nothing fancy. And still, here we are, yet again.

It's enough to make a grown man cry...

Of course, no excuse whether re-make or not. Again, the crafters seem to be on schedule, but after that it's like it's just left in some corner and forgotten, and then setup (sometimes obviously in a hurry) after some months. One should think this was the easiest part of making a guitar. Apart from that nut magic, of course...

I called Shamray today and asked him to "get a move on" with the parts procurement. We are waiting for him to bring the Sperzels and the straplocks today (both of which he claims are available locally).
Your parts box is also missing the three CTS pots, the three black metal knobs, the toggle switch, and the output jack.

Why wasn't this stuff purchased MONTHS ago? Only Mr. Shamray knows the answer to that...

Yea, that's Master Sushkov alright.

Mike playtested it today, and reports;

"All i could think was "best guitar ever" - when you play it yourself, you will agree. This guitar feels PERFECT, i dont think i've played a better feeling guitar in the past ten years."

So that sounds ok, i guess... :)

And believe it or not, the sun was shining today...

The guitar arrived today at lunch. I'll give it a full review in a week or two, but for now I can only say I'm very pleased.

It looks gorgeous and sounds sweet. It needs a truss-rod adjustment to play up to it's potential, but for some reason none of my Allen keys fit, so it'll have to wait a day or two.

I'll try to take some new pics and post them along with the full review when I've had some more time with her.

For now, thank you Master Sushkov for the great work, Michael for the great help and to mr Shamray for the speedy delivery.

Glad it arrived safely!

I would give it a couple of days to 'acclimatize' to your local environment, before you tweak the truss rod (its had a long trip, and who knows if Swedish customs guys bother to heat their warehouses)

Well, I've finally put the guitar down long enough to write a review, it should be up on Harmony Central in a day or two, but I'll post it here for now.

This Explorer is my second from Shamray Guitars, the first is also reviewed here at HC, so if you read that one you'll get a better understanding behind the reason for this second guitar being built.

In short there was some things that weren't quite to spec and that I wasn't quite happy with. After reading the review Shamray Guitars offered to have me send the guitar back and in return build me a new guitar to my exact specs at no extra cost. This was a slightly surprising offer, but one I gladly accepted.

So, about six months later FedEx dropped of another package, and here we go again... :)

Features: 10

Body: 1-piece mahogny, based on the pre-lawsuit ESP Explorer with instrument-grade flame maple top, back and control cavity cover.

Neck: 2-piece quartersawn bookmatched mahogny, U-shaped, 20mm @ 1st fret, 22mm @ 12th fret. 24.75 inch scale, "Scimitar" headstock with front and back instrument-grade flame maple headstock overlays. "JHD"-logo (my initials) inlayed in Mother of Pearl on the ebony trussrod cover.

Fingerboard: Ebony, no inlays except Mother of Pearl side dot markers, 12 inch radius, 22 Jumbo frets, dual-action trussrod, Graph-Tec nut.

Pickups: Bareknuckle Pickups "Warpig" in the bridge, Bareknuckle Pickups "Mule" in the neck. Ebony covers for both pickups.

Controls: 3-way toggle switch, individual volume controls for each pickup, neck pickup tone control.

Hardware: Gotoh Tune-O-Matic bridge and tailpiece, Sperzel locking tuners, Schaller strap-locks, all black.

Finish: All flame maple parts finished in a transparent pale bluish purple with black bursted edges, rest of guitar finished solid black.

Case: Hard custom case, black..

Well, once again it's a 10. Pretty hard putting another grade on something you've decided on yourself. Got exactly what I wanted, didn't hold back on anything and Shamray gladly obliged..

Sound: 10
I was very much looking forward to playing this beast after trying a friends LP and being blown away by the massive sound from the Warpig he had installed in it.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. It's a brutal pickup, very hot and dark yet never turning mushy and still having enough top end to balance things out. It's been described as a passive EMG-85 and there's definitely similarities there, even though I prefer the Warpig myself. Even though it's at its best when you're wildly chugging away at some monster metal riff, it's still surprisingly pleasant for clean and overdriven sounds if you just turn down the volume knob a bit. The alnico magnet used probably has something to do with that.

The Mule is something quite different, more of a hottish PAF pickup, intended more as a blues pickup. I figured it would complement the Warpig nicely when I felt like chilling out a little. It's very smooth and vintage sounding and definitely has that beautiful mellow warmness that I was looking for, yet has enough grunt to stay with the 'Pig without sounding out of place with both pickups active.

The guitar certainly does its part in bringing out the be(a)st in the pickups, the mahogny adding warmth while the maple and ebony supplies a little top end zing. Overall just a great sounding guitar for most anything I can throw at it, very impressive!

Action, Fit, & Finish: 9

I was slightly nervous opening the case for the first time, still remembering the slight disappoinment the last guitar brought with it.

My first thought on opening the case however was just WOW! The colour was spot on, the flame maple a lot more figured and alive than on the old guitar, the black hardware and ebony board and pickup covers perfectly complementing the finish. This is easily one of the sexiest things I've ever seen, couldn't be happier about the looks!

Not very surprisingly it needed some slight adjustments after the long flight from Russia (not to mention spending Easter at the Swedish customs warehouse). After settling down the neck is as straight and even as can be and I even ended up raising the action a little to get it up to what I like (1/16" bass side, 3/64" treble side @ 12th fret), but the neck is so straight it could go lower then that no problem without the strings buzzing.

Well, at least it could with a perfectly cut nut, but there's the only real imperfection I could find, I think it's just cut slightly to low, especially on the bass E string. This is slightly strange as the nut is already shimmed with what looks to be a strip of ebony. I'm guessing it might be that the guitar was setup with a bit more relief at the factory than what I prefer, and the slight straightening I did was all it needed to become a little low at the nut. Besides that though it still could have used a little more work, as the treble E string has a tendency to get pinched while tuning. It's not a huge problem by any means though and can easily be rectified, it just sticks out a little considering everything else feels absolutely perfect, so I'll deduct a point here.

The only other minor imperfections I can find is a tiny spot just above the nut where there's no dye applied and one or two of the side fret position markers have a tiny bit of paint creeping onto them.

Other then that though it's flawless, the neck feels like made for my hands, it plays like butter, the frets are nicely shaped and polished, the finish is as mentioned awesome, the controls work the way they should, everything is neat and tidy inside the control cavity, no excess solder used, etc, etc...

Reliability/Durability: 9

I'll just go ahead and copy what I wrote in the review of the first guitar, as that pretty much sums things up:

"This is obviously hard to judge given that I've only had the guitar a few weeks, but considering the quility of the hardware used and the general feel of solidness the guitar exumes I will give it a high mark. Shamray also offers extensive warranties for the hardware (5 years, I believe) and the integrity of the woodwork ("lifetime"), so if the necks warps or falls off you should be ok :). The only slight problem might be that the very thin nitro finish will probably wear easily, but that is the trade-off for optimum tone I guess. And hey, beat-up guitars are all the rage these days anyway."

Customer Support: 10

Just the fact that Shamray offered to build me a new guitar, without me nagging them about it too much I might add, made me feel a lot better about them and their sense of responsibility to their customers. On top of that they also pretty much let me go nuts when it came to extra details and parts without charging me anything extra for it, which was very much appreciated.

Also, this time the building process was a lot more pleasant, I got a crafter who knew English and had Internet access at work, enabling me to communicate directly with him when needed. Michael (who's in charge of foreign customer service) was as helpful as always and the owner, mr Shamray, did his part by sending the guitar on time. Things seem to have sorted themselves out at Shamray and the operation seems to be running a lot smoother now in general.

So, this time around there's no complaints and Shamray Guitars have very much redeemed themselves as far as I'm concerned.

Overall Rating: 10

Couldn't be happier with this guitar, it's exactly to specs, sounds amazing, plays beautifully and wasn't that expensive (well, relatively speaking). This was very much what I expected when I first ordered my guitar and even though it took 18 months to finally get it I still feel it was all worth it in the end. Kudos to everyone involved at Shamray, and especially to Michael and master crafter Sushkov!
